When I saw this week's theme - Safe - I was at first at a loss as to what to post. Then I remembered a photo I took at Glastonbury Abbey last year, of a duck waddling past a deep water sign, ignoring the warning on it's way for a swim. I went to Flickr to look for it, and in the process came across this photo of a Yeoman Warder at the Tower of London, I remembered my trip there last October and how much information this man passed on to the group of visitors he was guiding around the Tower, and I realised that his job is keeping history safe, not only by guarding the Tower and it's contents, (such as the Crown Jewels), but also by making sure that the history gets passed down to future generations, and boy is there a lot of history in the Tower of London. He bought the Tower to life, holding the interest of all those in the group, from the very young to the very old, making us laugh, making us cry, (or maybe that was just me, the sense of history was at times overwhelming), and at times making us jump with shock, (as he very graphically described a beheading).
If you visit London and only have time to 'do' one thing I strongly suggest that you pay a visit to the Tower of London, over 900 years of history in one place, it is fascinating.
I love that relaxed pose he's in ~ taking a breather. :) I had to stay in London for a couple of days last week to sit an exam down there, and had a whole day of sightseeing. Unfortunately I didn't make it to the Tower, but it's on my list for next time. :) http://mousepotato66.multiply.com/journal/item/154/Picture_Perfect_Safe
Preserving history and what history entails must be kept secure and safe for genrations to come, and the telling has to be spot on ... your tale with the photo insures us of that ... great post!
sharing history and making sure others learn it is one of the few ways that it continues .. it is important for us all to carry history on ... 9 woofs!
I'll be honest, when I saw the photo I thought....mmm, so he's a guard of the building behind him, he doesn't really look like he could guard much....he looks like he's nursing a bad back...lol. Then I read what you wrote and thought, mmm perfect. Thanks for sharing this.
How great to know that there are such people in the world who do care about history and can pass their knowledge to others to keep history safe. Well done.
Nice photo. Ijust watched a History channel documentuary on the 10 top British Castles with the Tower of London being #1, they showed this exact Beefeater performing his duties as both gurad to the crown jewels and tourguide. He seemed to be a humourous fellow http://stosoned.multiply.com/journal/item/295/Picture_Perfect_Theme_SAFE
Wonderful, love history too!! I hope to visit your country one day, so much history over so much time! Your view of the theme is very unique and thinking outside the box! History needs to be kept safe, maybe one of these days we will even learn from it instead of repeating the same things.
I spent many years working for the organisation that takes care of the Tower and other Palaces like Hampton Court. I also worked on the re-presentation of the Jewel House at the Tower, so spent quite some time there. The Beefeaters are a characterful lot - they've seen a lot of life before achieving their post at The Tower! "Keeping history safe" is extremely apt. :-)
