Awestruck

A few days ago she won the Olympic 400m Freestyle Gold medal, a few minutes ago I watched Becky Adlington obliterate the rest of the competition to take her second Gold in the 800m Freestyle race, and in the process breaking one of the longest standing world records by something like 2 seconds. She was amazing, I am in awe.

Pravada

Just had a very nice lunch at Pravada, it's a tapas bar, but not exclusively Spanish, many of the dishes were greek in origin.

My friend and I shared a lunchtime 'special', for £7.95 each we had crusty bread, greek salad and dips, (houmous and tzatziki); followed by lamb kebabs and roasted vegetables with melted cheese. They also gave us a complimentary dish of fried potatoes. The service was friendly and efficient, my friend only had an hour for lunch so we were relying on it being fairly quick and it was, our food arrived giving us plenty of time to eat at a leisurely pace.

I hope to go back to Pravada one evening, they do an evening 'special' where for £19.95 each you can order 5 dishes or for £35 you can choose 8. With around 30 different options it might prove hard to narrow it

Picture Perfect - Precious

It would have been very easy to post a picture of my children, or of my dear little step grandchild. It would have been very easy to post a picture of my great grandmother's pearls. It would have been very easy to post a picture of my darling mobile phone.

However I have decided to post a picture of a place that is very very precious to me, and to many people living in my town:

This is the Old Pier (or Birnbeck Pier) in my hometown of Weston-super-Mare, it was opened in 1867 and is the only pier in England to link the mainland to an island. Some of my most precious childhood memories are of Saturday mornings spent with my Dad on this pier, riding the little train along to the end, having an ice-cream, playing in amongst the buildings, admiring the gypsy caravan that was on display, (and wondering what it would be like to live in such a confined space).

My Dad is no longer here, this is where I go when I need to feel close to him.

The pier is no longer accessible ...

Soustas

There was nothing particularly wrong with Soustas, it's just not my favourite Greek Cypriot restaurant, I am possibly being a bit harsh in only giving it 3 stars.

Dinner with the girls tonight, 6 of us. We had a meat meze, a selection of many dishes, not all of which were meat but it didn't include any fish, (as opposed to the fish meze, not all of which is fish but which does not include any meat). It was all very nice, especially the butter beans with tomato and garlic. The service was good, the waiters friendly but not pushy.

It was maybe a little dear compared to other restaurants we have eaten in, the bill for 6 of us, for 3 courses (we each had either a licquor coffee, cointreau in my case, or a dessert) plus 4 bottles of wine, came to £175, but, we did have one hell of a lot of food for that.

At the end of the day, it just wasn't Dimitri's
